Welcome to

1000 Books before kindergarten

About the Program

Any child from birth until he or she starts kindergarten can participate in this program. It’s simple and the rewards are priceless. The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes, repeats count) before your child starts kindergarten.

Does it sound hard? Not really if you think about it. If you read just one book a night, you will have read about 365 books in a year, 730 in two years, and 1,095 books in three years.

If you consider that most children start kindergarten at around 5 years of age, you have more time than you think.

So, let's get started!!!

TIPS:

1. Keep it fun. Change your voice, make sounds, and laugh.

2. Have snuggle time. Hold your child while you read or use a blanket to make a fort.

3. Interact with your child. Give your child the opportunity to read along and ask a lot of questions.

4. Read books about what interests your child. When your child gets older, take them to the library and they can choose their own books.

5. Incorporate reading into a daily routine. Does your child like to be read to in the morning, after lunch, after dinner, or at bedtime? Make reading something that your child looks forward to.

6. Repeat favorites. Does your child like to be read the same story over and over? That’s okay. Read the same stories again and again. Your child will enjoy the repetition and become familiar with the way stories are organized.

7. Always carry a book with you where ever you go to keep your child occupied.
